About this firmware update
This service provides software for upgrading SB-900 firmware to v5.02.
Cameras that can be used to upgrade SB-900 firmware
D3 - Ensure the latest version of firmware (v2.00) is installed before proceding with this update.
D300 - Ensure the latest version of firmware (v1.10) is installed before proceding with this update.
D3S, D3X, D90, D300S, D700, D3000, D3100, D5000, D7000 - No firmware updates required.
Any required camera firmware updates can be downloaded from here
The following improvements have been made in version 5.02
- With uninterrupted shooting with the SB-900 set to i-TTL mode, images captured just before the flash ceased firing were sometimes overexposed.
This issue has been resolved. By resolving this issue, metering precision has been further increased and the number of times the flash fires has also been increased.
- When the SB-900, set to TTL auto flash mode, is used with a camera supporting the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS), flash mode automatically changes to A mode according to camera communication status. That flash mode was previously maintained, but it has been modified so that TTL auto flash mode is restored once the SB-900 again recognizes the camera as a CLS-compatible camera.

Before starting the update ensure that both the Speedlight and cameras batteries are fully charged. Microdrives cannot be used to perform this firmware upgrade. If the downloaded firmware will be copied to a CompactFlash memory card, do not use the Lexar Media JumpShot USB Cable, t he firmware may not be updated correctly.
1. Create a new folder on your desktop and download the firmware (F-SB900-V502W.exe) to this folder.
2. Format an approved memory card in the camera.
3. Connect the camera to the computer (in MSC Mass Storage USB mode) or use a memory card reader. If MSC Mass Storage USB mode is not available in your camera, a card reader must be used.
4. Run the downloaded files to create the folder titled "SB900Update". This contains the firmware file (SB900502.bin). Copy this .bin file to the top level of the memory card.
5. Disconnect the camera from the computer (if using an memory card reader then insert the memory card to the camera). Connect the Speedlight to the camera and turn both on
