Z 9 Firmware

• This service supplies software that can be used to update the Z 9 camera “C” firmware to version 5.10. Use [Firmware version] in the [SETUP MENU] to check the camera firmware version before proceeding. You will not need to download this update if the firmware listed above is already installed. • This update includes all changes made in previous updates. • A card reader and computer are required for the firmware update. • Read the information below before proceeding.

Time Required to Complete This Update This update takes approximately 6 minutes. A progress bar will be displayed when the update begins, but when updating from a “C” firmware version earlier than 2.00 you may notice that it takes about 2 minutes for the progress bar to be displayed. Do not turn off the camera until the firmware update is complete. IPTC Presets Performing this update from a “C” firmware version 3.10 or earlier will delete IPTC presets in the camera. This is an intended consequence of improvements to IPTC presets. Users who intend to continue using existing presets will need to copy them to a memory card using [IPTC] > [Load/save] > [Slot 1]/[Slot 2] > [Copy to card] in the [SETUP MENU] before performing the update. The saved presets can be loaded from the memory card using [IPTC] > [Load/save] > [Slot 1]/[Slot 2] > [Copy to camera] once the update is complete. Note that IPTC presets cannot be loaded if menu settings were saved to a memory card using [Save/load menu settings] > [Save menu settings] in a camera with a “C” firmware version 3.10 or earlier and loaded to the camera using [Save/load menu settings] > [Load menu settings] after performing this update. Be sure to copy and load the IPTC presets individually via the method described above. If this update is performed to a camera with a “C” firmware version 4.00 or later, the existing IPTC presets can be used after update without taking the above measures. GNSS Module Firmware Update You need to perform firmware updates twice if the GNSS module’s firmware “G” is not displayed under [SETUP MENU] > [Firmware version] or “G” is below 0.17. Following the update of Z 9 firmware “C” (performed with the first update), the GNSS module firmware will be updated with the second update. To perform the second update, follow Steps 3, 4, and 5 in “Updating the Camera Firmware”. Note: The second update is not necessary if the GNSS module’s firmware “G” is already 0.17, as with which version, the improvement has already been made.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 5.00 to 5.10

Note: The changes listed below under “Video Recording” and “Controls” are detailed in the Supplementary Firmware Update Manual. Note: Due to the addition of new menu items, some Custom Settings menu items have been renumbered. ■ Video Recording • Hi-Res Zoom is now available when the image area is set to “DX”. • Added a [Power/Hi-Res Zoom collab]* item to the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU] in position of g10. • Added a [Shutter mode] item to the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU] in position of g13. • Added [Zebra pattern color] to g15 [Zebra pattern] in the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU]. • Added options for customizing the brightness information display to g18 [Brightness information display] in the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU]. * This feature may be available with NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ lenses (as of November 2024). ■ Controls • Added [Save and load power zoom position]* to f2 [Custom controls (shooting)] and g2 [Custom controls] in the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU]. • Added a [Zoom ring control (PZ lens)]* item to the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU] in position of f10. • Custom Settings f12 and g9 in the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU] is now [Assign power zoom]. In addition, [Power zoom speed] has been divided into two items: [Power zoom speed (zoom buttons)] and [Power zoom speed (zoom switch)]*. • The following items can now be saved and loaded using [Save/load menu settings] in the [SETUP MENU]: - [Location data (built-in)] > [Record location data] in the setup menu - [Retouch] > [Customize retouch options] in the playback “i” menu (from “C” firmware version 5.00). * This feature may be available with NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ lenses (as of November 2024). ■ Other Changes • Added [Power zoom speed (zoom buttons)] to the roles assignable to the “i” menu via [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU] > f1 and g1 [Customize <i> menu]. • Fixed the following issues: - The camera would sometimes stop responding if the [C30] high-speed frame capture + option was selected for [Release mode] and the shutter-release button was pressed halfway shortly after zooming in the monitor shooting display (live view). - Pressing the AF-ON button did not end the zoomed-in display in manual focus when: ▸ The AF-ON button was set to either [AF-ON] or [AF-area mode + AF-ON], and ▸ [ON] was selected for d19 or g17 [Half-press to cancel zoom (MF)] in the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU]. - The viewfinder and monitor shooting displays (live view) sometimes caused overexposures when the standby timer had expired and reactivated. - In rare circumstances, photos would be overexposed when taken using [Recall shooting functions (hold)] assigned to a custom control. - Buffer capacity sometimes dropped with some CFexpress memory cards. - In rare circumstances, the camera would stop responding or the viewfinder and monitor shooting displays (live view) would be corrupted after burst photography when: ▸ [ON] was selected for [Photo flicker reduction] in [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU]. - RAW videos recorded under the following conditions would appear too bright when played back with compatible computer software. ▸ Either [N-RAW 12-bit (NEV)] or [ProRes RAW HQ 12-bit (MOV)] was selected for [Video file type] and [SDR] for [Tone mode]. ▸ ISO 100 or below was selected for [ISO sensitivity settings]. - In slow network speed environments, the camera would be slower to respond when zoomed in or out on photos while uploading to the FTP server if: ▸ [ON] was selected for [Connect to FTP server] > [Options] > [Auto upload] in [NETWORK MENU], or ▸ An option other than [Off] was selected for [Connect to FTP server] > [Options] > [Upload in HEIF format] in [NETWORK MENU].

Note: The shooting modes in all shooting banks “A” through “D” are set to P right after the firmware is updated. • Added [Focus point border width] to a11 [Focus point display] in the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU]. • Added a [Max. aperture Lv during MF] item to the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU] in position of a14. • Added [Half-press to cancel zoom (MF)] items to the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU] in positions d19 and g17. • White balance and exposure compensation can now be adjusted while shooting function settings are recalled with button press (hold). • Changes have been made to how a full format is performed with [Format memory card] in the [SETUP MENU]. ■ Displays • Changed the position where the memory card high-temperature warning is displayed in video mode. ■ Network • A warning now appears when the connection to an ATOMOS AirGlu BT accessory is unstable or disrupted. • Added [Wi-Fi connection (STA mode)] which allows you to connect the camera to the smart device via a wireless LAN access point. • Port numbers can now be specified using [Connect to FTP server] in [NETWORK MENU]. • Added [Upload in HEIF format] to [Connect to FTP server] > [Options] in [NETWORK MENU]. Note: Converted HEIF images are not stored on the memory card. • ATOMOS AirGlu BT accessories and MC-N10 remote grips can now be used together. • Automatically obtained IP address will be maintained after automatic IP addressing disabled. • Automatically obtained gateway/DNS server addresses are now displayed in the TCP/IP edit display. • File names of the image and audio now match if the file name of the image is renamed during transfer. • Changed the default values for the following settings displayed when connecting wirelessly: - Encryption keys - The password displayed after the camera's default settings are restored ■ Other Changes • When [AF-area mode] is set to [3D-tracking] and the human subject is large relative to the frame and multiple eyes are detected near the tracking focus point, the camera will assign priority for focusing to the eye closer to the point. • The time the shooting display goes dark after shutter is released when [ON] is selected for [Photo flicker reduction] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU] has become shorter. • The RGB histogram is now easier to view when [Mode 1] or [Mode 2] is selected for d12 [Warm display colors] in [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU]. • [SETUP MENU] > [Firmware version] now shows GNSS module firmware “G”. • GNSS module firmware update is now available. Note: The second update is not necessary if the GNSS module's firmware “G” is already 0.17, as with which version, the improvement has already been made. Note: Refer to “GNSS Module Firmware Update” for updating procedures. • The firmware for the GNSS module has been updated. - Improved acquisition performance when used in certain areas where the quasi-zenith satellite “QZSS” can be acquired. • Fixed the following issues: - Fine-tuning values set in [AF fine-tuning options] in the setup menu did not apply while the subject is detected with [Wide-area AF (S)], [Wide-area AF (L)], [Wide-area AF (C1)], or [Wide-area AF (C2)] selected for [AF-area mode]. - Switching to the playback display and attempting to operate the sub-selector did not result as intended while the memory card access lamp was lit after burst shooting when [Series playback] > [Sub-selector displays first shot] in [PLAYBACK MENU] was enabled. - Optimal exposure could sometimes not be achieved in burst or focus shift shooting. - Shutter release was sometimes disabled when “Bulb” was selected for shutter speed. - Subjects could sometimes not be detected in the correct position when repeatedly shooting airplanes.

• Added [Birds] and [Airplanes] to [AF subject detection options] in the photo shooting and video recording menus.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 4.00 to 4.01

• Fixed the following issues: - The camera would in rare circumstances stop responding or fail to record a video correctly if an attempt for video recording took place after the standby timer had expired then reactivated with [Frame size/frame rate] set to 1920 × 1080 in the VIDEO RECORDING MENU. - The [Choose image area] and [Switch FX/DX] roles assigned to camera controls were disabled when a slow-motion video option was selected. - The first shot in burst photography would sometimes fail to acquire appropriate white balance when [Auto] or [Natural light auto] was selected for white balance. - If shooting continued while [ON] was selected for [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU] > [Photo flicker reduction], the photo live view display would be partially disrupted.

Note: Users of the following software will need to update to the latest versions. • Camera Control Pro 2 version 2.36.0 or later, IPTC Preset Manager version 1.3.0 or later, NX Studio version 1.4.0 or later, NX MobileAir version 1.2 or later (Android edition), NX Field version 1.4 or later Note: The changes listed below under “Still Photography”, “Video Recording”, “Playback”, “Controls”, “Displays”, and “Network (Also NX Field)” are detailed in the Supplementary Firmware Update Manual. Note: Due to the addition of new menu items, some Custom Settings menu items have been renumbered. ■ Still Photography • Added [Auto capture] to the photo shooting menu. Users can select capture criteria from [Motion] (the direction the subject is moving), [Distance] (how far the subject is from the camera), and [Subject detection] (whether or not a subject of a given type is detected), and the camera will take photographs automatically while it detects subjects that meet the selected criteria. Note that [Distance] is available with NIKKOR Z lenses and may not function as expected when used with other lenses. • The length of time the camera will continue to buffer frames before cancelling shooting during the Pre-Release Capture phase of high-speed frame capture has been increased from 30 to 300 seconds. • Added [Large] to the size options available for [Role played by card in Slot 2] > [JPEG Slot 1 - JPEG Slot 2] in the photo shooting menu. • Added new bracketing increments for use during auto bracketing with [AE & flash bracketing], [AE bracketing], or [Flash bracketing] selected for [Auto bracketing set]. This change also applies to [Interval timer shooting] > [Options] > [AE bracketing] > [Increment]. ■ Video Recording • Added [Auto capture] to the video recording menu. Users can select capture criteria from [Motion] (the direction the subject is moving), [Distance] (how far the subject is from the camera), and [Subject detection] (whether or not a subject of a given type is detected), and the camera will record video automatically while it detects subjects that meet the selected criteria. New reset options have also been added. - f2[Custom controls (shooting)] - f3[Custom controls (playback)] - g2[Custom controls]    Among the roles that can now be assigned via Custom Settings f2 [Custom controls (shooting)] and g2 [Custom controls] is [Switch eyes], which can be used to switch focus between the subject’s left and right eyes.    A new [Frame advance zoom position] > [Prefer focus point] role for Custom Setting f3 [Custom controls (playback)] can be used during playback zoom to center the display on the active focus point for each picture when scrolling through pictures using a command dial. Choose [Prefer focus point] for f3 [Custom controls (playback)] > [Main command dial] or [Sub-command dial] > [Frame advance zoom position]. • Made updates to [Non-CPU lens data] in the [SETUP MENU]. • Increased the character limit for “Category” entries in IPTC presets. • Restructured the [Camera sounds] item in the [SETUP MENU] with the addition of new options, including new sounds and volume level adjustment for the electronic shutter. ■ Displays • Added focus-distance information to the focus distance indicator displayed during manual focus. • The option selected for [Viewfinder display size] (formerly [Finder display size (photo Lv)]) in the [SETUP MENU] now also applies in video and playback modes. ■ Network (Also NX Field) • Made changes and additions to the [Connect to FTP server] item in the [NETWORK MENU]. • Changed the procedure used when configuring the camera for synchronized release, increasing to twenty the number of groups that can be created, while the number of cameras in each group that can be controlled from the master camera has been increased to sixteen. • Added [Overwrite copyright info] under [Connect to other cameras] in the [NETWORK MENU]. ■ App-Related Changes With NX MobileAir: • the camera live view display for photo mode now shows NX MobileAir status, and • camera settings saved to a memory card using [Save/load menu settings] can now be downloaded to the smart device or copied from the smart device to the camera memory card using NX MobileAir. ■ Other Changes • Improved the accuracy of [3D-tracking] for small, fast-moving subjects when [Auto], [People], [Animal], or [Vehicle] is chosen for [AF subject detection options] and no subject of the selected type is detected. • Improved focus accuracy for dark, low-contrast subjects. • Improved focus lock-on with flicker detection in low-speed continuous release mode. • Made other improvements to the autofocus operation and its reliability. • Improved the performance of auto white balance during portrait photography. • Fixed an issue that sometimes resulted in the viewfinder darkening during playback when [Auto] was selected for [Viewfinder brightness]. • It is now easier to obtain the correct exposure from the first shot during interval-timer photography in high-contrast settings or settings dark enough for starlight view. • The histogram display is no longer available when starlight view is enabled. • Changed the video low-capacity warning so that it is now displayed in white on a red background when there is less than one minute remaining. The warning is now also displayed when recording is not in progress. • Users now have more precise control when scrolling through videos during playback using the progress bar. • Fixed the following issues: - The camera would sometimes stop responding if the standby timer was reactivated after having expired with [Prioritize viewfinder (1)] or [Prioritize viewfinder (2)] selected for [Limit monitor mode selection] and high-speed frame capture selected for [Release mode]. - The camera would sometimes stop responding if changes were made to Picture Control parameters during NEF (RAW) processing. - The viewfinder would in rare instances fail to display the focus point correctly during burst photography. - [Image size] could not be adjusted by holding the QUAL button and rotating the sub-command dial if a DX-format lens was attached with [ON] selected for [Image size settings] > [Enable DX image sizes]. - SB-800 flash units would sometimes stop responding after pictures were taken with the flash disabled. - [Vignette control] would sometimes fail to correctly control vignetting when an option other than [Off] was selected. - Users could no longer select the FX image area after choosing the DX image area in Camera Control Pro 2 with a 100p or 120p option selected for video frame rate. - Focus could still be adjusted using the focus ring when [Disable] was selected for [Manual focus ring in AF mode] in the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU] if an option other than [Non-linear] was chosen for [Focus ring rotation range] in the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU]. - The battery would draw down more quickly while the camera was off if [ON] was selected for [Connect to smart device] > [Wi-Fi connection] in the [NETWORK MENU] even if [OFF] was selected for both [Bluetooth connection] and [Upload while off]. - The German and Korean menus and help text contained typos.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 3.01 to 3.10

• Added support for NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S lenses. • Improved focus accuracy for low-contrast subjects during burst photography with [Wide-area AF (S)], [Wide-area AF (L)], [Wide-area AF (C1)], [Wide-area AF (C2)], [3D-tracking], or [Auto-area AF] selected for [AF-area mode]. • Improved the frame advance rate during burst photography with optional flash units. • Fixed the following issues: - The [Retouch] > [Trim] item in the playback “i” menu would in rare cases create distorted copies or not permit selection of the desired crop. - Copies created by blending a large number of pictures together using the [Retouch] > [Lighten] item in the playback “i” menu would sometimes exhibit a green color cast. - Rating pictures during playback zoom would in some instances temporarily corrupt the display. - In extremely rare cases, the camera would stop responding.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 3.00 to 3.01

• The MC-N10 remote grip can now be used for synchronized release on cameras connected via a ten-pin remote terminal. • Improved focus tracking in focus mode AF-C when [Wide-area AF (S)], [Wide-area AF (L)], [Wide-area AF (C1)], or [Wide-area AF (C2)] is selected for [AF-area mode]. • Fixed the following issues: - If an option other than [Subject detection off] was chosen for [AF subject detection options] with [Wide-area AF (S)], [Wide-area AF (L)], [Wide-area AF (C1)], or [Wide-area AF (C2)] selected for [AF-area mode], autofocus would sometimes fail when subjects were detected outside the focus point. - If [AF-area mode], [AF-area mode + AF-ON], [Recall shooting functions], or [Recall shooting functions (hold)] was assigned to a control using Custom Setting f2 [Custom controls (shooting)] with [3D-tracking] selected for [AF-area mode] in the stored settings, the camera would sometimes fail either to focus or to track the desired subject when autofocus was initiated by pressing the chosen control in focus mode AF-C. - When [AF-area mode], [AF-area mode + AF-ON], [Recall shooting functions], or [Recall shooting functions (hold)] was assigned to a control using Custom Setting f2 [Custom controls (shooting)], the camera would in rare cases stop responding if the chosen control was pressed immediately before or after shooting while [Pinpoint AF] or [Single-point AF] was selected for [AF-area mode]. - FTP errors would sometimes occur during connection to FTP servers. - Upload to certain FTP servers would continue indefinitely with no pictures being uploaded. - Once added to [MY MENU] or [RECENT SETTINGS], Custom setting d14 [Release timing indicator] could not be selected in either menu, nor removed from [MY MENU] using [Remove items].

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 2.11 to 3.00

Note: The changes listed below under “Still Photography”, “Video Recording”, “Displays”, “Playback”, “Controls”, and “Network” are detailed in the Supplementary Firmware Update Manual. ■ Still Photography • The [Image size] item in the photo shooting menu is now [Image size settings] and offers new options that apply only to pictures taken using the DX image area. • Added [C60] to the frame rates available for high-speed frame capture. Custom Setting d4 in the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU] is now [Pre-Release Capture options]. • Added [High-frequency flicker reduction] to the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU]. • Added [Focus position auto reset] under [Focus shift shooting] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU]. ■ Video Recording • Added [High-frequency flicker reduction] to the [VIDEO RECORDING MENU]. • Added [Hi-Res Zoom] to the [VIDEO RECORDING MENU]. • Added [Reset using remote] under [Timecode] in the [VIDEO RECORDING MENU]. ■ Displays • The [Prioritize viewfinder] monitor mode has been replaced by [Prioritize viewfinder (1)] and [Prioritize viewfinder (2)]. • Expanded the range of monitor brightness options to include both brighter and darker settings. • Made the following additions to the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU]: - Added a [3D-tracking focus point color] option for Custom Setting a11 [Focus point display]. - Added [Always] and [Only when flash is not used] options for Custom Setting d9 [View mode (photo Lv)] > [Show effects of settings]. ■ Playback • The [Rotate tall] item in the playback menu is now [Auto-rotate pictures]. interval-timer photography when a non-CPU lens was attached would cause gradually worsening overexposure throughout each series of pictures. - Attempts to connect to SFTP servers configured using macOS would fail with an error unless the home folder was selected as the destination. - When users switched from one custom settings bank to another storing a different setting for Custom Setting a9, [Focus mode restrictions], the focus mode setting stored in the second bank would not be recalled; instead, the setting for the first bank would continue in force and could not be changed. - The camera would sometimes stop responding if a picture was taken with [ON] selected both for [Picture review] in the [PLAYBACK MENU] and for [Photo flicker reduction] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU]. - Messages in some languages would sometimes overflow the display. - Apps such as NX Tether and SnapBridge would display incorrect values for maximum aperture with some lenses during remote photography. - The standby timer would in rare circumstances not be reactivated if the shutter-release button was pressed shortly after it expired. - The following issues would occur in mode M if an option other than [Exposure maintenance off] was selected for Custom Setting b7 ([Keep exp. when f/ changes]) in the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU] when [OFF] was selected for [ISO sensitivity settings] > [Auto ISO sensitivity control] in the photo shooting menu: ▸ Selecting [ISO sensitivity] for Custom Setting b7 ([Keep exp. when f/ changes]) would make the camera less responsive when ISO sensitivity was adjusted using the ISO button and command dials. The camera would also display ISO sensitivities lower than the lowest available value (in these circumstances, the lowest available value would be ISO 64). ▸ Selecting [Shutter speed] for Custom Setting b7 ([Keep exp. when f/ changes]) would make the camera less responsive when shutter speed was adjusted using the command dials. - Removing and replacing the memory card after copying white balance from an existing photograph using [White balance] > [Preset manual] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU] or [VIDEO RECORDING MENU] would result in the picture for the chosen preset being displayed as a blank black image.

Viewing the Camera Firmware Version

1. Turn the camera on.
2. Press the camera MENU button and select [Firmware version] in the [SETUP MENU] to display the camera firmware version.
3. Check the camera firmware version.
4. Turn the camera off.

Updating the Camera Firmware

1. Download the following firmware file to your computer.
   Please make sure you have the downloaded firmware file on your computer.
   • Z_9_0510.bin (the camera firmware)
2. Using a card reader, copy “Z_9_0510.bin” to a memory card that has been formatted in the camera.
   Note: Be sure to copy the firmware to the root (top-most) directory of the memory card. The camera will not recognize the new firmware if it is placed in a folder under the root directory.
3. Insert the memory card into Slot 1 on the camera and turn the camera on.
4. Select [Firmware version] in the [SETUP MENU] and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the firmware update.
5. Once the update is complete, turn the camera off and remove the memory card.
6. Confirm that the firmware has been updated to the new version.
