This software update program is for the customer-owned product listed above (the “affected product”), and is provided only on acceptance of the agreement listed below. By selecting “Accept” and clicking “Download”, you are held to have accepted the terms and conditions of the agreement. Be sure you understand the terms of the agreement before beginning download.

  • • This service supplies software that can be used to update the D500 camera “C” firmware to version 1.31. Before proceeding, select Firmware version in the camera SETUP MENU and check the camera firmware version. You will not need to download or install this update if the firmware listed above is already installed.
  • • This update includes all changes made in previous updates.
  • • Read the information below before proceeding.

Updating from “C” Firmware Versions 1.00 through 1.12 to Version 1.20

  • You will need to perform the update twice. Performing the update for a second time completes the firmware update.
  • During the first update, the camera may or may not display the message, “Update failed. Contact a Nikon-authorized service representative.” Continue with the second update regardless.
  • Performing the Second Update
  • Complete Steps 5 through 7 of “Updating the Camera Firmware”.
  • A Note on the Second Update
  • Note that the firmware version may or may not change as a result of the first update. If the firmware version has changed, the “Current” and “New” versions displayed in the “Update?” dialog will be the same; otherwise, the two versions will be different.
  • In either case, the firmware version will be updated when you perform the update a second time.
  • SnapBridge App Unable to Connect
  • If the SnapBridge app is unable to connect to the camera after the update, you may not have performed the second update.
  • Select Connect to smart device in the camera SETUP MENU to display the app and camera name; if the Bluetooth icon does not flash in the display, you will need to perform the update again.
Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.30 to 1.31
  • • Fixed an issue that would, when pictures were taken with a flash unit attached, sometimes result in the flash not performing in accordance with the value selected for ISO sensitivity settings > Maximum sensitivity with flash after either of the following operations:
    • - Loading settings with Save/load settings > Load settings
    • - Switching photo shooting menu banks using Photo shooting menu bank
  • Note
  • Performing a firmware update while the camera is affected by this issue will not in itself correct the problem. After performing the update, you will need to either:
    • • reset all setting using Reset all settings > Reset, or
    • • load previously-saved settings (if available) from the memory card using Save/load settings > Load settings.
Changes from Previous Versions
Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.20 to 1.30
  • • Added supported for CFexpress cards (Type B). For more information, see the Nikon support website for your country or region.
  • • Fixed an issue that caused both the Entire frame and Background only options for Custom Setting e3 Exposure comp. for flash in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU to produce the same results as Entire frame during flash photography.
Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.15 to 1.20
  • • The camera now also supports direct Wi-Fi connections to devices running SnapBridge. For more information, see the “Addendum to the User’s Manual” in which this feature is described. Before using this feature, upgrade to the following version of the app:
    • - SnapBridge version 2.5.4 or later
  • • Fixed the following issues:
    • - The camera sometimes had trouble focusing on subjects in the focus points at the edges of the frame.
    • - The camera would sometimes stop responding during shooting in continuous high-speed (CH) release mode.
    • - The camera would sometimes not turn off after the power switch was rotated to “OFF”.
Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.14 to 1.15
  • • The SETUP MENU > Time zone and date > Time zone display now shows only the names of major cities in the currently selected zone.
Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.13 to 1.14
  • • Fixed an issue that prevented images being copied using the Copy image(s) item in the PLAYBACK MENU if an exhausted battery or no battery was inserted in the camera, even when a battery with sufficient charge was inserted in the MB-D17 battery pack.
Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.12 to 1.13
  • • Fixed an issue that interfered with pairing or resulted in unreliable connections when the camera was used with the Android edition of the SnapBridge app.
Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.11 to 1.12
  • • Fixed an issue that resulted in unreliable connections between the camera and the iOS 10.2 version of the SnapBridge app.
Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.10 to 1.11
  • • Fixed an issue that prevented the touch-shutter option releasing the shutter when autofocus was used during live view with an SB-800 flash unit attached.
  • • Changed the items checked when image sensor cleaning was performed using the SETUP MENU > Clean image sensor > Clean now option. We recommend that you use this option to perform image sensor cleaning after the update is complete.
Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.02 to 1.10
  • • Added support for the iOS version of SnapBridge.
  • • Changed some help text.
  • • Fixed the following issues:
    • - Images would not display correctly if playback zoom was used during image review.
    • - The focus point display would not light if the shutter-release button was pressed halfway after the standby timer had expired.
    • - The camera would stop responding if a command dial was used in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU > f Controls > f1 Custom control assignment > Movie record button + command dial menu.
    • - If an option other than Off was selected for Active D-Lighting in the PHOTO SHOOTING MENU, pictures taken with an optional flash unit in auto aperture (AA), non-TTL auto (A), or distance-priority manual (GN) flash mode would be underexposed.
Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.01 to 1.02
  • • Addressed an issue that sometimes caused errors with certain UHS-II SD memory cards. As we were able to confirm that these were read errors arising not in the camera but in the cards themselves, we addressed the issue with a work-around that switches temporarily to UHS-I mode when a card-side error occurs in UHS-II mode. The camera switches back to UHS-II mode when turned off and then on again or when the standby timer restarts. Card-side read errors may still occur after the update, albeit very infrequently.
Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.00 to 1.01
  • • Fixed an issue that sometimes resulted in the options for SETUP MENU > Language not displaying correctly.

  2. Press the camera MENU button and select Firmware version in the SETUP MENU to display the camera firmware version.
