This software update program is for the customer-owned product listed above (the “affected product”), and is provided only on acceptance of the agreement listed below. By selecting “Accept” and clicking “Download”, you are held to have accepted the terms and conditions of the agreement. Be sure you understand the terms of the agreement before beginning download.

  • • This service supplies software that can be used to update the firmware for SB-5000 flash units to version 14.004. You will not need to download or install this update if the firmware listed above is already installed.
  • • This firmware update is performed with the SB-5000 attached to the camera. See “Compatible Cameras” for a list of compatible cameras.
  • • This update includes all changes made in previous updates.
  • • Read the information below before proceeding.
Compatible Cameras

The following cameras can be used to update SB-5000 firmware:

  • • Z-series cameras
  • • The D6, D5, D4S, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D780, and D750
  • • The D500, D7500, D7200, D5600, D5500, D5300, D3500, D3400, and D3300

Be sure to update to the camera firmware for the following cameras to the latest version before updating the firmware for the SB-5000.

  • • The D4, D800, D800E, D610, and D600
  • • The D7100, D5200, and D3200

Note: Other cameras cannot be used.

Note: Updates can be performed for you by a Nikon-authorized service representative.

  • • In support of the NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct lens, the product can now display an aperture of f/0.95.

  • • Added support for the Z 7, Z 6, and D3500.
Changes from Firmware Version 14.001 to 14.002
  • • Fixed the following issues:
    • - Zoom (angle of illumination) did not function as expected at low temperatures.
    • - When AF ONLY (AF assist illumination activated, flash function canceled) was selected for Custum (Custom menu) > AF (AF-assist illumination/canceling flash function), pressing the shutter-release button halfway after restarting the standby timer or after turning on the camera would not activate the AF-assist illuminator.
Viewing the Flash Unit Firmware Version

On the Camera

  1. Attach the SB-5000 to the camera and turn both the camera and flash unit on.
  2. Press the camera MENU button and select Firmware version in the SETUP MENU to display the SB-5000 firmware version.
  3. Check the SB-5000 firmware version.
  4. Turn the camera and flash unit off.

On the SB-5000

  1. Turn on the SB-5000.
  2. Press the MENU button and use the multi selector to select SET_UP (Setup menu) > Ver..
  3. Check the SB-5000 firmware version.
  4. Turn the flash unit off.

Updating the Flash Unit Firmware
  1. Create a folder on the computer hard disk and name it as desired.
  2. Download F-SB5000-V14004W.exe to the folder created in Step 1.
  3. Run F-SB5000-V14004W.exe to extract the following file to a folder named “SB5000Update”:
    • SB500014004.bin (the flash unit firmware)
  4. Using a card slot or card reader, copy “SB500014004.bin” to a memory card that has been formatted in the camera.
  5. Insert the memory card in the camera. If the camera allows you to select one slot as the primary slot and the other as the secondary slot, insert the card into the slot currently selected as the primary slot. Otherwise insert the card into Slot 1.
  6. Attach the SB-5000 to the camera and turn on the camera and flash unit.
  7. Press the camera MENU button, select Firmware version > Update in the SETUP MENU, and follow the on-screen instructions to perform the firmware update.
  8. Once the update is complete, turn off the camera and flash unit and remove the memory card.
  9. Turn on the camera and flash unit and confirm that the firmware has been updated to the new version.

Updating the Flash Unit Firmware
  1. Download F-SB5000-V14004M.dmg.
  2. Double-click the F-SB5000-V14004M.dmg icon to mount a disk image containing a folder named “SB5000Update”, which in turn contains the following file:
    • SB500014004.bin (the flash unit firmware)
  3. Using a card slot or card reader, copy “SB500014004.bin” to a memory card that has been formatted in the camera.
  4. Insert the memory card in the camera. If the camera allows you to select one slot as the primary slot and the other as the secondary slot, insert the card into the slot currently selected as the primary slot. Otherwise insert the card into Slot 1.
