D4S Firmware

• This service supplies software that can be used to update the D4S camera “C” firmware to version 1.33. Before proceeding, select Firmware version in the camera SETUP MENU and check the camera firmware version. You will not need to download or install this update if the firmware listed above is already installed. • Read the information below before proceeding.

IMPORTANT: Firmware updates cannot be performed if Enable is currently selected for Network > Network connection in the SETUP MENU. Select Disable for Network connection before proceeding.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.32 to 1.33

• Added the following supports for AF-P lenses: - If the standby timer expires after focusing, the focus position will no longer change when the timer is reactivated. - When focus is adjusted by rotating the lens focus ring, the focus indicator in the viewfinder (and in live view, the focus point in the monitor) now flash to indicate when infinity or the minimum focus distance is reached. • Added support for AF-P DX lenses.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.31 to 1.32

• Fixed the following issues, which would in rare cases occur when RAW+JPEG photographs were taken with write-enabled cards inserted in both the XQD and CompactFlash card slots, RAW primary - JPEG secondary selected for Secondary slot function in the SHOOTING MENU, and On selected for Network > Options > Auto send in the SETUP MENU. - The camera would sometimes freeze on restart after users had (1) pressed the shutter-release button all the way down without first activating the standby timer and then (2) allowed the timer to expire or turned the camera off without first reactivating the timer. - If the shutter-release button was pressed all the way down to begin shooting with the standby timer off, the first shot would sometimes neither be marked for transfer nor uploaded.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.30 to 1.31

• Fixed an issue that occurred with WR-R10 wireless remote controller firmware version 3.00. In rare cases, the camera would fail to display the number of exposures remaining or would take about a minute to power down when the WR-R10 was connected.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.20 to 1.30

• An External recording control option has been added to the HDMI item in the SETUP MENU. If the camera is connected via HDMI to a third-party recorder that supports the Atomos Open Protocol (the Atomos SHOGUN, NINJA2, or NINJA BLADE), selecting On allows camera controls to be used to start and stop recording. More information is available in a supplementary manual. Note: • Choose an option other than 576p (progressive) or 480p (progressive) for HDMI > Output resolution in the SETUP MENU. • Choose an option other than Auto for HDMI > Output resolution in the SETUP MENU when 640x  424; 30p or 640x  424; 25p is selected for Movie settings > Frame size/frame rate in the SHOOTING MENU. • Fixed the following issues: - In rare cases, the shutter would not be released when the user attempted to take photographs in movie live view. - About 4 seconds of static could be heard on audio recorded with external HDMI recorders during movie live view. - Exposure compensation would fail to produce the desired results if a negative value was selected when NEF (RAW) images were processed using the NEF (RAW) processing option in the RETOUCH MENU. - Images would in rare cases fail to record correctly with HDR (high dynamic range) selected in the SHOOTING MENU. - In portrait orientation, the monitor would not show the focus point in the correct location if 5:4 (30x24) was selected for Choose image area.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.10 to 1.20

• Commander mode can now be selected for e3: Optional flash in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU when an optional SB-500 flash unit is attached. * • The Auto and Flash white balance options can now be used with the LED light on the optional SB-500 flash unit. • Auto white balance is now more consistent. • There is no longer a limit on the number of shots that can be taken in a single burst at shutter speeds of 4 s or slower when a continuous-release mode is selected in exposure mode S or M. * • There is no longer a limit on how long the shutter can remain open when “Time” is selected for shutter speed. * • We have changed how focus points are displayed in the viewfinder if the camera is rotated between “wide” (landscape) and “tall” (portrait) orientations with Focus point and AF-area mode selected for a10: Store by orientation in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU and different focus points chosen in each orientation. We have also changed how focus points are displayed in the viewfinder if a lens focus function button is pressed with AF-area mode selected for f19: Lens focus function buttons in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU. • The following issues have been resolved: - If the user focused using the AF-ON button before shooting in continuous-release mode, the frame rate would drop under the following conditions: AF-S selected for focus mode, single-point AF selected for AF-area mode, and Focus selected for a2: AF-S priority selection and AF-ON only selected for a4: AF activation in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU. - When an AF-S NIKKOR 800​mm f/5.6E FL ED VR lens was attached, “Err” would be displayed in the top control panel and pictures could not be taken under some exposure conditions. - Images would sometimes fail to display correctly during image review if playback zoom was used while the memory-card access lamp was lit. - Images would not clear from the display if an optional WR-1 wireless remote controller was used with On selected for Image review in the PLAYBACK MENU. - The camera photo info display would not show the correct range for pictures taken with an optional flash unit in distance-priority manual (GN) mode. - When pictures taken using a PC-E lens were viewed in Capture NX-D and other Nikon software, the metadata would list the lens as type E rather than type D. - The photo information display for movies, movie stills, and photos taken with the Silent shutter-release option would sometimes list incorrect values for shutter speed, aperture, and ISO sensitivity. - If the camera was connected via HDMI to a 4K compatible TV, neither the camera nor the television would display menus correctly. - Volume sometimes could not be adjusted if indicators were hidden during movie playback (None (image only)). - If both XQD and CompactFlash cards were inserted in the camera when it was connected to a computer, the computer would not recognize the XQD card. • Some help text has been changed. * More information is available in a supplementary manual.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.01 to 1.10

• Selecting SPORT for vibration reduction when an AF-S NIKKOR 400​mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens is attached no longer affects the frame advance rate in continuous release mode. The rate now remains the same as when vibration reduction is OFF. • exFAT is now used in place of FAT 32 when memory cards with capacities over 128 GB are formatted in the camera. • Pressing the movie-record button when the menus are displayed during movie live view now closes the menus and resumes movie live view. Press the movie-record button again to begin recording. • The center of the multi selector can now be used in live view to zoom in on the selected focus point when Zoom on/off is chosen for Custom Setting f1 (Multi-selector center button) > Playback mode, although the focus point itself is not displayed. • The help text for the Custom Setting f19 (Lens focus function buttons) > Preset focus point option has been improved. • The following issues have been resolved: - The number of shots shown as remaining in the memory buffer in continuous release mode (C-REM) would vary with the option selected for NEF (RAW) recording > NEF (RAW) bit depth when Small was selected for NEF (RAW) recording > Image size in the SHOOTING MENU. - If Overflow was selected for Secondary slot function in the SHOOTING MENU and PC + CARD was selected for Destination in Camera Control Pro 2, the shutter release would be disabled when the card in the primary slot filled. - Regardless of whether image review had been enabled by selecting On for Image review in the PLAYBACK MENU, the image would not be displayed after shooting if the shutter was released after the standby timer expired. - Images played back full frame via HDMI would be displayed at low resolution when not zoomed in. - The effects of auto distortion control were not visible during image review. This would apply if On was selected for Image review in the PLAYBACK MENU when pictures were taken with On selected for Auto distortion control in the SHOOTING MENU. - The effects of auto distortion control would not be reflected in multiple exposures shot with On selected for Image review in the PLAYBACK MENU and On selected for Auto distortion control in the SHOOTING MENU. - Using White balance > Preset manual to copy white balance from an image with a comment would result in only 24 characters of the comment being copied to the selected preset. - If Wired LAN was selected for Network > Choose hardware in the SETUP MENU and Obtain automatically was selected for IP address when FTP upload was selected in Connection wizard, choosing automatic address assignment again after login to the ftp server failed would result in the IP address being reset to 000.000.000.000. - Movies with frame rates of 30p, 25p, or 24p would not display properly on televisions connected via HDMI if 1080p (progressive) was selected for HDMI > Output resolution in the SETUP MENU. - Copying IPTC presets to the camera: Attempting to preview a file with a profile containing double-byte characters would cause the camera to freeze. - Adding items to My Menu: The camera would display OK even if the option currently highlighted in Add items could not be added to My Menu. - In some menus, icons or characters would overlap or characters would be displayed too far to the right when عربي (Arabic) was selected for Language in the SETUP MENU.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.00 to 1.01

• If View histograms was selected for Custom Setting f1 (Multi-selector center button) > Playback mode, pressing the center of the multi selector during playback would not produce the desired results if the image was recorded with NEF (RAW) + JPEG fine, NEF (RAW) + JPEG normal, or NEF (RAW) + JPEG basic selected for Image quality and a photo info display other than overview or RGB histogram was selected. This issue has been resolved. • Resolved an issue that resulted in saturation in the highlight and RGB histogram displays changing in response to flashing highlights. • Resolved an issue that resulted in saturation changing when images recorded with Adobe RGB selected for Color space were zoomed in. • Resolved an issue that caused a drop in sharpness when portrait-orientation images were zoomed in one or two steps with On selected for Rotate tall in the PLAYBACK MENU. • Resolved an issue that sometimes resulted in NEF (RAW) images shot with NEF (RAW) selected for Image quality not recording correctly if photographs were taken first using the “compressed“ and then the “non-lossless compression” options.

Viewing the Camera Firmware Version

1. Turn the camera on.
2. Press the camera MENU button and select Firmware version in the SETUP MENU to display the camera firmware version.
3. Check the camera firmware version.
4. Turn the camera off.
