The NEF Codec

The NEF Codec module allows NEF (RAW) files to be handled as easily as their JPEG and TIFF equivalents.

  • • NEF (RAW) photos taken with the D810A are now supported.
  • • Fixed issue in which NEF (RAW) images could no longer be displayed after file info had been edited in the “Details” tab of the Explorer “Properties” window.

Installation
  1. Create a folder on the hard drive and name it as desired.
  2. Check Accept and download the file to the folder created in Step 1.
  3. Double-click the downloaded file to launch the installer.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation.

Note: Earlier versions (version 1.6.0 or earlier) of the NEF codec must be uninstalled before installation can be completed. Follow the installers on-screen instructions during installation to uninstall earlier versions.

Before installing the software, read the notes below.

Notes

Be sure to read the following notes:

  1. “Camera Model” and “Camera Manufacturer”

    Do not change the “Camera model” and “Camera Manufacturer” fields in the “Details” tab of the NEF file properties. Operation of Nikon applications and the NEF Codec is not guaranteed if these fields are changed.

  2. Rotating NEF Images

    NEF images can not be rotated in the Explorer, Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Photo Viewer, or Windows Live Photo Gallery.

  3. 64-Bit Editions of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1

    Under 64-bit editions of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, the Explorer, Windows Photo Gallery, or Windows Photo Viewer may not display the thumbnails for NEF images correctly. If this occurs, use Disk Cleanup as described below.

    • 1) Right-click the system disk and select Properties.
    • 2) Select Disk Cleanup in the “General” tab.
    • 3) Under “Files to delete”, select Thumbnails.
    • 4) Click OK to start disk cleanup; when prompted, click Delete Files.

  4. Capture NX 2 Version 2.3.0 or Later

    If NEF images saved in Capture NX 2 version 2.3.0 or later are opened in Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Live Photo Gallery, or Windows Photo Viewer:

    • • A message may be displayed stating that the file is corrupt and can not be opened
    • • Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Live Photo Gallery, or Windows Photo Viewer may not function normally after the file is opened

  5. Windows Vista

    Version 1.27.0 supports Windows Vista in addition to Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1.

Checking the Current Version

Microsoft Windows 8.1

  1. Right-click an NEF image and select Windows Photo Gallery or Windows Live Photo Gallery* for Open with.
  2. Confirm that this image is displayed.

Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1

  1. Right-click an NEF image and select Windows Photo Gallery or Windows Live Photo Gallery* for Open with.
  2. Confirm that this image is displayed.

* Windows Live Photo Gallery is available from the Windows Live website.

Uninstalling the Codec

Microsoft Windows 8.1

  1. Select the Control Panel app.
  2. Under Programs, select Programs and Features.
  3. Select NEF Codec and click or tap Uninstall to launch the uninstaller.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Microsoft Windows 7

  1. Open the Start menu and select Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs and Features.
  3. Select NEF Codec and click Uninstall or Remove to launch the uninstaller.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
