Install Procedure

  1. Create a new folder on the computer hard drive and name it appropriately.
  2. Click [I agree - Begin download] to download the installer to the folder created in Step 1.
  3. Double-click the downloaded file to start the installer.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation.
*If you have already installed version 1.6.0 or earlier, you will need to uninstall the NEF Codec. You can uninstall earlier versions by following the on-screen instructions provided by this installer.

Be sure to read the software information before installation.

  1. Changing Camera model and Camera maker of NEF file

    Please do not change the contents of Camera model and Camera maker shown in the detail information area of a NEF file. If you change these, we cannot ensure proper operation of both Nikon software and NEF Codec for the file.

  2. Rotating NEF files

    You cannot rotate NEF files with Windows Explorer, Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Photo Viewer or Windows Live Photo Gallery.

  3. Support for 64-bit Editions of Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.1

    If thumbnails for NEF files fail to display correctly in Explorer, Photo Gallery, or Photo Viewer for 64-bit editions of Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.1, perform a disk clean-up as described below.

    • 1) Right-click the system drive in Computer and select Properties.
    • 2) Select Disk Cleanup in the "General" tab.
    • 3) Select Thumbnails in the "Disk Cleanup" tab "Files to delete" list and remove the checks from the other items.
    • 4) Click OK to start the disk cleanup. When the "Are you sure you want to permanently delete these files?" prompt is displayed, click Delete Files.

  4. Using NEF images that were edited/saved with Capture NX 2 Version 2.3.0 or later in Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Live Photo Gallery, or Windows Photo Viewer may result in the following:

    • When trying to view the NEF images, you may receive the message that the file is corrupt and cannot be opened.
    • Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Live Photo Gallery, or Windows Photo Viewer may not work properly after displaying the NEF images.

Confirming Operation

Microsoft® Windows® 8.1

  1. Right-click an NEF image and select Open withツ> Windows Photo Viewer or Windows Live Photo Gallery.ツ*
  2. Confirm that the image is displayed full size.

Microsoft® Windows® 7 Service Pack 1

  1. Right-click an NEF image and select Open with > Windows Photo Viewer or Windows Live Photo Gallery.*
  2. Confirm that the image is displayed full size.

Microsoft® Windows Vista® Service Pack 2

  1. Right-click an NEF image and select Open with > Windows Photo Viewer or Windows Live Photo Gallery. *
  2. Confirm that the image is displayed full size.
*Note: Windows Live Photo Gallery can be downloaded from the Windows Live website.

Uninstall Procedure

Microsoft® Windows® 8.1

  1. Select Control Panel in the applications list.
  2. In the Programs group, select Uninstall a program.
  3. Select the NEF Codec in the list and click Uninstall/Change.
  4. Next, follow the instructions that will appear on the screen to uninstall the software.

Microsoft® Windows Vista®, and Windows® 7

  1. Open the Control Panel from the Start menu.
  2. Select Uninstall a program.
  3. Choose NEF Codec from the list of the installed programs and execute to run the uninstaller.
  4. Next, follow the instructions that will appear on the screen to uninstall the software.
