This software update program is for the customer-owned product listed above (the “affected product”), and is provided only on acceptance of the agreement listed below. By selecting “Accept” and clicking “Download”, you are held to have accepted the terms and conditions of the agreement. Be sure you understand the terms of the agreement before beginning download.

  • • This service supplies software that can be used to update the D850 camera “C” firmware to version 1.30. Before proceeding, select Firmware version in the camera SETUP MENU and check the camera firmware version. You will not need to download or install this update if the firmware listed above is already installed.
  • • This update includes all changes made in previous updates.
  • • Users of NX Studio and Picture Control Utility 2 will need to update to NX Studio version 1.3.1 or later and Picture Control Utility 2 version 2.4.14 or later.
  • • Read the information below before proceeding.
Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.21 to 1.30
  • • Added [Portrait impression balance] to the photo and movie shooting menus. For more information, see Supplementary Firmware Update Manual. To view NEF (RAW) pictures taken using firmware version 1.30 or later on a computer, you will need to update NX Studio to version 1.3.1 or later and Picture Control Utility 2 to version 2.4.14 or later.
  • • Fixed an issue that resulted in attempts to initiate [Lock mirror up for cleaning] in the [SETUP MENU] causing the camera to display the message “Disable [Network connection] in the Bluetooth menu” and lock the mirror in the down position, preventing it being raised for cleaning, when [Enable] was selected for either of the following [SETUP MENU] items:
    • - [Bluetooth] > [Network connection]
    • - [Airplane mode]

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.20 to 1.21
  • • Fixed an issue that in rare circumstances resulted in the virtual horizon failing to function after the firmware was upgraded to version 1.20.
Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.11 to 1.20
  • • Added supported for CFexpress cards (Type B). For more information, see the Nikon support website for your country or region.
  • • Changed the default for Custom Setting b6 Center-weighted area from ⌀8 mm to ⌀12 mm.
  • • Fixed the following issues:
    • - When shooting with the lens aperture ring rotated to maximum aperture on a non-CPU lens for which lens data had been supplied via Non-CPU lens data in the SETUP MENU, the camera would sometimes fail to display the correct aperture value in the monitor or record it to the Exif aperture value field for photographs taken with On (Mode 2) selected for Silent live view photography in the PHOTO SHOOTING MENU.
    • - When movie live view was output to an external recorder via HDMI, the R and L volume indicators in the camera monitor would show the reverse of the indicators for the HDMI device.
    • - A portion of the display would dim during silent photography if all the following conditions were met:
      • ▹ On (Mode 1) selected for Silent live view photography in the PHOTO SHOOTING MENU
      • ▹ Continuous low speed (CL) selected for release mode
      • ▹ 2 fps selected for Custom Setting d1 CL mode shooting speed in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU.
    • - When a VR lens was attached, the camera would stop responding if all the following conditions were met:
      • ▹ Photo live view enabled
      • ▹ Shutter speed set to 1.3 s or slower
      • ▹ On selected for Long exposure NR in the PHOTO SHOOTING MENU
      • ▹ On (series) or On (single photo) selected for HDR (high dynamic range) > HDR mode in the PHOTO SHOOTING MENU
      • ▹ ON selected with the lens VR switch
Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.10 to 1.11
  • • Fixed an issue that disabled firmware updates for certain lenses and accessories.
Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.03 to 1.10
  • • The camera now also supports direct Wi-Fi connections to devices running SnapBridge. For more information, see the “Addendum to the User’s Manual” in which this feature is described. Before using this feature, upgrade to the following version of the app:
    • - SnapBridge version 2.5.4 or later
  • • Fixed the following issue:
    • - The camera sometimes had trouble focusing on subjects in the focus points at the edges of the frame.
Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.02 to 1.03
  • • Fixed an issue that in rare circumstances would delay the shutter release or the start of the autofocus operation.
Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.01 to 1.02
  • • The SETUP MENU > Time zone and date > Time zone display now shows only the names of major cities in the currently selected zone.
Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.00 to 1.01
  • • Fixed the following issues:
    • - Users exiting Clean image sensor after adding it to and entering via MY MENU would be returned not to MY MENU but to the SETUP MENU.
    • - Photos taken with On selected for Long exposure NR would sometimes have increased noise or shadows with a greenish cast.
    • - Slight aperture reset lag would sometimes occur after shooting at shutter speeds under 1/10 s (type E and PC-E lenses excluded).
Viewing the Camera Firmware Version
  1. Turn the camera on.
  2. Press the camera MENU button and select Firmware version in the SETUP MENU to display the camera firmware version.
  3. Check the camera firmware version.
  4. Turn the camera off.

Updating the Camera Firmware
  1. Create a folder on the computer hard disk and name it as desired.
  2. Download F-D850-V130W.exe to the folder created in Step 1.
  3. Run F-D850-V130W.exe to extract the following file to a folder named “D850Update”:
    D850_0130.bin (the camera firmware)
  4. Using a card slot or card reader, copy “D850_0130.bin” to a memory card that has been formatted in the camera.
    Note: Be sure to copy the firmware to the root (top-most) directory of the memory card. The camera will not recognize the new firmware if it is placed in a folder under the root directory.
  5. Insert the memory card into the slot currently selected as the primary slot on the camera and turn the camera on.
  6. Select Firmware version in the SETUP MENU and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the firmware update.
  7. Once the update is complete, turn the camera off and remove the memory card.
  8. Confirm that the firmware has been updated to the new version.

Updating the Camera Firmware
  1. Download F-D850-V130M.dmg.
  2. Double-click the F-D850-V130M.dmg icon to mount a disk image containing a folder named “D850Update”, which in turn contains the following file:
    D850_0130.bin (the camera firmware)
  3. Using a card slot or card reader, copy “D850_0130.bin” to a memory card that has been formatted in the camera.
    Note: Be sure to copy the firmware to the root (top-most) directory of the memory card. The camera will not recognize the new firmware if it is placed in a folder under the root directory.
  4. Insert the memory card into the slot currently selected as the primary slot on the camera and turn the camera on.
  5. Select Firmware version in the SETUP MENU and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the firmware update.
