SB-500 Firmware

This software update program is for the customer-owned product listed above (the “affected product”), and is provided only on acceptance of the agreement listed below. By selecting “Accept” and clicking “Download”, you are held to have accepted the terms and conditions of the agreement. Be sure you understand the terms of the agreement before beginning download.

  • • This service supplies software that can be used to update the firmware for SB-500 flash units to version 1.13.002. You will not need to download or install this update if the firmware listed above is already installed.
  • • This firmware update is performed with the SB-500 attached to the camera. See “Compatible Cameras” for a list of compatible cameras.
  • • Read the information below before proceeding.
Compatible Cameras

The following cameras can be used to update SB-500 firmware:

  • • Z-series cameras
  • • The D6, D5, D4, D4S, Df, D3X, and D3S
  • • The D3 (camera A/B firmware version 2.00 or later)
  • • The D810, D810A, D800, D800E, D780, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, and D300S
  • • The D300 (camera A/B firmware version 1.10 or later)
  • • The D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, D3000, and D90
  • • The COOLPIX A

Other cameras cannot be used.

Note: If the camera firmware requires updating, make sure to update the camera firmware before updating the firmware for the SB-500.

Note: Updates can be performed for you by a Nikon-authorized service representative.

Changes from Firmware Version 13.001 to 13.002
  • • Fixed an issue that in extremely rare circumstances would result in the SB-500 not functioning when used with the following cameras that support the Nikon Creative Lighting System:
    • - The D5, D4, D4S, Df, D810, D810A, D800, D800E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300, D300S, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, D3000, D90, D60, D40, and D40X
    • - The COOLPIX A, COOLPIX P7800, and COOLPIX P7700
Viewing the Flash Unit Firmware Version
  1. Attach the SB-500 to the camera and turn both the camera and flash unit on.
  2. Press the camera MENU button and select Firmware version in the SETUP MENU to display the SB-500 firmware version.
  3. Check the SB-500 firmware version.
  4. Turn the camera and flash unit off.

Updating the Flash Unit Firmware
  1. Create a folder on the computer hard disk and name it as desired.
  2. Download F-SB500-V13002W.exe to the folder created in Step 1.
  3. Run F-SB500-V13002W.exe to extract the following file to a folder named “SB500Update”:
    • SB50013002.bin (the flash unit firmware)
  4. Using a card slot or card reader, copy “SB50013002.bin” to a memory card that has been formatted in the camera.
  5. Insert the memory card in the camera. If the camera allows you to select one slot as the primary slot and the other as the secondary slot, insert the card into the slot currently selected as the primary slot. Otherwise insert the card into Slot 1.
  6. Attach the SB-500 to the camera and turn on the camera and flash unit.
  7. Press the camera MENU button, select Firmware version > Update in the SETUP MENU, and follow the on-screen instructions to perform the firmware update.
  8. Once the update is complete, turn off the camera and flash unit and remove the memory card.
  9. Turn on the camera and flash unit and confirm that the firmware has been updated to the new version.

Updating the Flash Unit Firmware
  1. Download F-SB500-V13002M.dmg.
  2. Double-click the F-SB500-V13002M.dmg icon to mount a disk image containing a folder named “SB500Update”, which in turn contains the following file:
    • SB50013002.bin (the flash unit firmware)
  3. Using a card slot or card reader, copy “SB50013002.bin” to a memory card that has been formatted in the camera.
